Somchai Wongsawat

The Thai cabinet has chosen the brother-in-law of ousted former leader, Thaksin Shinawatra, as the country's acting Prime Minister, after the judicial sacking of Samak Sundaravej.

Somchai Wongsawat will be in charge until an emergency meeting of Parliament elects a permanent premier on Friday.

The ruling coalition will name its candidate for the post at a news conference on Thursday in Bangkok. There is speculation that it might be Somchai himself, or his cabinet colleagues Sompong Amornwiwat, or Surapong Suebwonglee.

It could even be Samak Sundaravej, as the court's ruling that stripped him of his position did not ban him from holding it again in the future.
